VOLCANICO [NICARAGUAN MTB]

Volcanico had been a passion project that was years in the making before we were able to get ourselves to Nicaragua. We wanted to do a video project with Kurt Sorge since we met him at Hoffest, his downhill mountain bike contest in Nelson, BC.  The idea came up to look for volcanos to ride. We scoured the planet and after connecting with Schwalbe Tires and Flor De Caña, the tastiest rum in the business, we pin pointed Nicaragua as the spot. We had an aggressive plan to ride 5 volcanos in 10 days… plans changed. We ended up only riding three but those three were amazing. The top of the list was Mombotomo, a volcano that erupted two years ago and still puffs out sulfur gas daily.

Pretty quickly we realized that the volcanos deserved more respect than we thought. Thankfully we had a talented crew that worked their asses off hiking 60 pound backpacks of camera gear and water up mountain sides every single day. We also had three of the best big mountain riders the sport has ever produced: Kurt Sorge, Nico Vink, and Kyle Jameson.

We didn’t set out to change the sport we just wanted to do a gnarly trip that made mountain biking look fun. I think we accomplished that goal.

When we returned from the trip down south we quickly found some media partners once word got around about the adventure. The above 22 minutes documentary of the trip is living on Outside TV and the below action clip is being hosted by Teton Gravity.
